Elementary students honored for their donation

Fourth-grade students at Notre Dame Elementary School were honored for their donation to Geauga Park District's Observatory Park located in Montville. Mrs. Anne Storey, the fourth-grade social studies teacher, was invited to attend an event at the site of Observatory Park to honor supporters of this project.

Students Harison Bhanoo and Angelo Capito and their mothers joined Mrs. Storey for the Celebration of Stars, an evening for stellar donors. They were invited for hors d'oeuvres, a tour of the historic Nassau Observatory, a sneak preview of the world's only Silver-Tier Certified "Dark Sky Park," and a star viewing through the telescope of the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society.

When the park opens for educational field trips, Notre Dame Elementary will be among the first invited to attend.

Chardon area architecture targeted for NDCL interior design students

Mary Wheelock's interior design class did not have to travel very far to study period architecture and new home construction. With the help from some local Chardon area realtors, the students toured select homes in Chardon representing several different architectural styles.

"Chardon has a rich inventory of lovely period houses with many being more than 150 years old" Wheelock stated.

Darren Burke, a realtor with Keller Williams, said, "Showing off homes is something all of us in the real estate industry have a lot of passion for - it was our pleasure to open up some of these incredible homes so the NDCL students could see their beauty and hear their history."

One of stops on the field trip was to the Hidden Glen subdivision to see the newer construction by local builders. Lynn Bender, a local Howard Hanna agent, showed off some of the "Green Construction" building practices used today by Payne and Payne Builders.

Nancy DiFranco, a local realtor for Coldwell Banker, was amazed to find out that the Edwardian-style century house she has listed in Chardon was the home Dr. Corey owned and lived in when he started the beginnings of what is now the Geauga Health System. The original Corey Hospital has been beautifully restored and brings back a lot of memories for many local Chardon area residents as their original birthplace.

Chardon Square is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Geauga County's only city (all others are townships), with its well-documented history, celebrated town square and historic buildings, is only seven miles from the Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin campus.
