Township meetings

The Munson Fire Department advises to check batteries of all household smoke detectors at the same time and urges homeowners to have a smoke detector on every floor.

Anyone who needs help placing new smoke detectors in their homes may call the non-emergency number of the Munson Fire Department at (440) 286-6797.

Open house at NDCL

The annual Notre Dame Cathedral Latin open house for prospective NDCL students and their families will be held Nov. 1, from noon to 3 p.m., at the NDCL campus located at 13000 Auburn Road in Munson. The event is open to anyone with children in the sixth, seventh or eighth grades.

Voting in Munson Township

The hours for voting Nov. 3 are 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at all three polling places in Munson: Munson Township Hall, 12110 Auburn Road, Notre Dame Cathedral Latin, 13000 Auburn Road, and the Geauga Family YMCA, Bass Lake Road.

Munson Township has eight candidates on the ballot for the three seats on the Board of Trustees: four candidates for one two-year seat and four candidates for two four-year seats. Also on the ballot are three renewal levies, including the 2.1-mill, five-year road and bridge levy, the 2-mill, four-year road and bridge levy and the .65-mill, five-year fire operating apparatus levy.

Absentee ballots may be cast at the Board of Elections, 470 Center St., Building 5-A, Chardon, through the close of business Nov. 2.

Friends of WomenSafe fundraisers

A "Sit & Knit for WomenSafe" will be held Nov. 1, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Grand River Cellars Winery in Madison. Cast on Café of Willoughby will provide patterns and materials to create lovely purses to be donated to residents of Women Safe's Green House Shelter. A Chinese auction will be held and lunch will be served, all for only $20 per person.

Then, at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 7, an Amish style wedding dinner, served buffet style, will be held at the Middlefield Fire Station. Space is limited; last year's dinner was an early sellout. Cost is $25 per person or $12 for children 12 and under. The Alvord Insurance Co., Home Savings Bank and Patterson Fruit Farm are sponsors of the event.

Proceeds from both fundraisers will be donated to WomenSafe, Inc. in Munson Township.

Ted Henry at Notre Dame

Noted Cleveland TV Channel 5 news anchor Ted Henry, will be the guest speaker at the 11th annual Distinguished Speaker Series hosted by the Geauga County Library Foundation, on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Notre Dame Educational Center, 13000 Auburn Road, Munson.

The speaker portion of the program is free and open to the public. A private reception at $10 per person will be held at 6 p.m. with light refreshments.

With the arts

The Geauga Council For Arts & Culture's Art in the Mart program presents the photography of Paul A. Newman, Chardon-based attorney, at the New York Deli, 425 Water St. in Chardon through Nov. 30.

Mr. Newman has won numerous awards for his spectacular photographic work. He is the founder of the Geauga County Veterans Memorial on Ravenwood Drive, which will be formally dedicated Nov. 8.

Computer recycling

Munsonite Mike Dorka offers help to anyone who is having a problem disposing of non-working computers, printers, monitors, etc. Mike has been the owner/operator of Network Management, 210 Washington St. in Chardon, for 15 years and is eager to help the environment by recycling computer equipment. Hours for drop-off are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call (440) 285-8400 for more information.

Reminders

The annual Halloween party at the Munson Fire Station will be held Oct. 31, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to Munson residents. The party is sponsored by private donations.

There will be a haunted house, bouncing tents, free refreshments and more. The event provides a safe and sane alternative to door-to-door trick or treating. Costumes are encouraged.

Reservations are being taken for Breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus Dec. 5 at Munson Township Hall. There are four time slots available starting at 8 a.m. Coordinated by the Munson Township Park Board, the proceeds will benefit the board's work in the township's parks throughout the year. Last year's breakfast was an early sellout. Stop at the township hall for reservation forms or call the office at (440) 286-9255.
