Skeletons in the family closet

It's after Halloween and the Geauga County Genealogical Society is talking about skeletons. Sunny McClellan Morton will present "Skeletons in Your Family Closet" at the Nov. 10 meeting of the society. The program begins immediately following the 7 p.m. business meeting at the Chardon Library 110 E. Park St.

The group meets the second Tuesday of each month, except July and August, at the Chardon Library. Meetings and programs are free and open to the public. For information, call the Chardon Library (440) 285-7601 or Jan Began at (440) 729-4237.

Chili cook-off, community day

The Ledgemont Booster Club announces the eighth annual Community Day and Chili Cook-off on Oct. 31 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Ledgemont Elementary School, 16200 Burrows Road, Thompson Township.

Local churches and organizations are expected to serve up their best recipes while Ledgemont students provide entertainment. In addition to chili, a concession of hot dogs, baked goods and beverages will be available. Admission is free.

Election Day turkey dinner

Parkman Community House is holding its annual Election Day dinner Nov. 3 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The complete turkey dinner, prepared by Parkman Congregational Church, is $10 per person. Adult-size carryouts are also available.

Parkman Community House is located at 16295 Main Market/SR 422.

Business person of the year

The 19th annual "Business Person of the Year" award will be presented by the Chesterland Chamber of Commerce to a local business person who has actively brought recognition to his/her company.

Nomination forms are available at the Chamber Office or online. Mail or bring a submission to: Chesterland Chamber of Commerce, 8228 Mayfield Road, Suite 4B, Chesterland, OH 44026, or fax it to (440) 729-2690. Entries must be received by 2 p.m. Jan. 8. New Mercies Chinese auction

New Mercies Community Church is holding its third annual Chinese auction Nov. 14. Doors open at 3 p.m. followed by the auction at 5 p.m.

The $7 admission includes bidding tickets. Receive $1 off admission with food donations for the food pantry. Additional sheets cost $5. Food and drink will be available. There are more than 250 items to be auctioned off including a girls 20-inch bike and two tickets to Dollywood.

The church is located at 12767 Butternut Road in Burton.

Beekeepers meet Oct. 29

The Geauga Bee Keepers will meet Oct. 29 in the gallery room at Kent State-Geauga campus, 14111 Claridon Troy Road in Burton. The meeting will feature a general discussion and bake-off. Please bring a recipe. Public is welcome.

Post 459 upcoming events

American Legion Post 459 is serving a fish fry dinner featuring Alaskan pollock Oct. 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. The Atwood - Mauck Post is located at 14052 Goodwin St. in Burton. For information, call Bo at (440) 834-8764.

Then, on Nov. 8, Post 459 will present the colors during the dedication ceremony at the Geauga County Veterans Memorial site located on Ravenwood Drive across from University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center. Call Dick at (440) 285-2333 for information.

Chardon Rotary gears up for auction

The Rotary Club of Chardon will hold its 18th annual Harvest Auction Nov. 7 at Quail Hollow Resort in Concord Township. The fund-raising event supports many worthwhile causes in Chardon, Geauga County and the world.

The event features Chinese, silent and live auctions as well as 50/50 raffles and an open bar. Festivities begin at 6 p.m., followed with a formal dinner choice of steak, chicken or vegetarian, at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets to the auction/dinner are $75 per person, or $150 per couple, and are available through Nov. 2 by contacting Dick Depenbrok at (440) 286-4216 or Charlie Brown at (440) 286-6649.

Shop Bountiful Boutique

Chardon Christians Fellowship holds its first "Bountiful Boutique," a unique way of shopping for the holidays, Nov. 6 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the corner of 401 South Hambden and Grant streets. The vendor/crafter show features shopping, a bake sale and much more.

Holiday baskets will be raffled off throughout the day. Some items are cash and carry; prepaid orders will be taken for the holidays.

Apple pie sale

Newbury United Community Church is selling fresh, homemade, unbaked, 9-inch apple pies for use during the holidays. Pies will be ready for freezing or may be baked after pickup.

Pies are $8 each and orders must be prepaid. Deadline for orders is Nov. 4. Pies must be picked up at the church on Nov. 7, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Water for Life Holiday Celebration

Chagrin Valley Rotary Club presents "Water for Life Holiday Celebration" Nov. 14, from 6 to 10 p.m., at Lowe's Greenhouse and Gift Shop, 16540 Chillicothe Road, Bainbridge. The event benefits Katie Spotz' Row for Water, which raises money to provide safe drinking water to people around the world, and features holiday decorating ideas, wine tasting, silent and Chinese auctions and plentiful hors d'oeuvres.

American Legion breakfast with Santa, craft show

The Burton American Legion Auxiliary Post 459 is hosting Breakfast with Santa Nov. 28 and 29 and the ninth annual Santa's Collection Craft Show Nov. 29.

Breakfast will be served Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for children 6-12 and free for children 5 and under.

The craft show will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Area crafters will offer unique gifts, crafts and toys. Admission to the craft show only is free. For table information, call Carol at (440) 834-4532.

All proceeds benefit the scholarship fund. The Post is located on Goodwin Street in Burton.

Howl-meowl-ween at Rescue Village

Rescue Village is holding a special celebration Oct. 31 from noon to 5 p.m. Guests may draw for a discount on all shelter dogs 6 months and older. Win a 20, 30 or 50 percent discount.

Adoption fees on many of the adult cats will be reduced to $25 and teenagers (kittens 4 months to a year) will be $10. Black cats will not be up for adoption until Nov. 1.

Come in costume and bring the kids; there will be tricks and treats. The shelter stops adoptions at 4:15 p.m.

St. Anselm Christmas Boutique

St. Anselm's Women's Guild is sponsoring its annual Christmas Boutique Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Anselm Church, 13013 Chillicothe Road in Chesterland. The $1 donation for admission entitles guests to a chance to win a door prize throughout the day.

More than 90 vendors from the area will be displaying their specialties for holiday decorating and gift giving. There will be a snack bar and bake sale.

At the end of the day, there will be a raffle for 13 great prizes including a ceramic holy family and many other handmade prizes. Winners need not be present.

Join the Boutique Bounce by also stopping at Old South Church, 9802 Chillicothe Road in Kirtland and St. Mark Lutheran Church at 11900 Chillicothe Road in Chesterland on the same day. Pick up a card at the first stop and have it stamped at each show for a chance to win one of three gift baskets.

Fourth annual Santa Shop

Claridon Girl Scout Troop 1324 is looking for crafters and vendors for its third annual Santa Shop to be held Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Claridon Town Hall. The hall is located at the corner of U.S. 322 and Claridon-Troy Road.

Admission is free. There will be refreshments, a bake sale, door prizes and Santa from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
